A police officer was so determined to get justice for an elderly war veteran robbed in his own home that he studied law in his spare time to force reluctant prosecutors to act.And not just charge her - get her convicted!
Detective Constable Stephen Hopkins was appalled when the Crown Prosecution Service refused to take action against a woman suspected of stealing £600 from 85-year-old Edwin Stout.
But instead of accepting its decision, he researched the law and consulted a Cambridge professor to prove it was possible to charge the alleged thief, even though the only witness – Mr Stout – had died.
DC Hopkins’ perseverance paid off when a woman of 21 was jailed more than two years after the crime.This being such an unusual occurrence these days, it merited an award:
His hard work and dedication was recognised last night when he was named runner-up in the UK’s first-ever Police Federation National Detective Awards.They haven't announced the winner yet, but the 'Telegraph' tells us it'll be announced on Thursday:
The winner of the PFNDF detective award will be presented in a ceremony in London on Thursday and is the first of its kind.So it's a politically correct fight between the team investigating honour killings and the team investigating child abuse. Who, it seems to me, are doing no more than their jobs. DC Hopkins went beyond his job.

This was actually on the Daily Mail website yesterday and I put a sarcy comment underneath.It wasn't published and a short time later the story was pulled.Imagine my surprise!

Fantastic effort. It really makes me wonder just how many cases are simply cast aside by the CPS when there is ample evedince for conviction. Tip of the iceberg I think. Who are the CPS accountable to? Will action be taken against the individual responsible for not making charges in the first instance? I doubt it.
Why is he a runner up? Politics and political correctness. He truly deserves a real commendation. The police and other such institutions are infected with this need for worthless awards and commendations and good work reports. You would not believe the huge amount of such things given out to people who are doing no more than their job.

How very true Andy .. Sadly, I suspect that DC Hopkins laudable actions may well ensure that he remains a DC too ...
Hats off to Stephen Hopkins for not just going through the motions.
And disappointing he has to play second fiddle to solving murder amongst the inbreeders and the groomers.
Runner up? His career is probably over for going against the nomenklatura on this.

It worries me that middle class people can't see what their agenda is,which is to destroy public confidence in the police.(Yes I fully expect comments like "it's too late" etc etc).Don't disappoint me gang.
