A new play about John Major’s rise to power, written by James Graham, will premiere at the National Theatre in London next year, as part of a season that puts political upheaval and global conflict at the heart of its programme.
Wow, really going for the popular events there!
The National Theatre said the play would explore what leadership means at times of political change, with Graham returning to the recent political history that has become a recurring subject of his work.
What leadership?
Also on the programme is The Great Indaba, written by Moira Buffini and directed by Rubasingham, which dramatises an extraordinary 1997 meeting in South Africa involving Nelson Mandela’s new national unity government and political rivals from Northern Ireland, as the Good Friday agreement negotiations approached a breakthrough.
Another new play, Samira, by Carmen Nasr, is set during the Arab Spring and will be directed by Emily Burns. The Adeyemis – A Family Saga, a new political family drama by the British Nigerian writer Oladipo Agboluaje, will have its world premiere in the Dorfman theatre, directed by Lucian Msamati and starring Uzo Aduba.
I’m going to the National Theatre in November, but not for any of this politically correct rubbish, to see a production of ‘The Jungle Book’ which promises to hew more closely to the liteature than the wretched Disney abomination.
Among the season’s other new work is Mr Loverman, Natasha Gordon’s stage adaptation of Bernardine Evaristo’s acclaimed novel about a married Caribbean man confronting his sexuality. Gary Beadle, Jo Martin and Danny Sapani are among the initial cast, with Paulette Randall directing.
Ugh, giving that one a miss too.
There is also a new British musical, Glorious Madness, featuring songs by Joan Armatrading, with a book by Iman Qureshi and directed by Phyllida Lloyd.
A new British musical, featuring songs by an American… 🙄

Joan Armatrading was born in the Caribbean but moved to Birmingham in England when she was seven years old.

Sorry, Joan is English.
I've heard that live theatre is struggling for audiences . . .maybe now we know why . . .
Anotheroad of Left wing bollocks that I cannot wait to miss. Bound to have a go at "Fatcher", and of course "colonialism" and for the hat trick, slavery....
Theatre has become the performance space for either tired, repetitive leftist derivative shite lecturing and hectoring the paying audiences, or rewritten, bowdlerised, sanitised and mutilated classics to make them "relevant" and to add a "message" often with frankly laughable DEI castings to show how "inclusive" it is, again insulting the paying public's intelligence.
Then you get wankers such as Benedict Cumberbatch and others, interrupting the proceedings to lectured and rail about some issues that exercises his remaining brain cell, "palestine" "waaaacism" or whatever the latest fad happens to be, as long as it isn't defending our own and or country.
Theatre has turned to shit since the late sixties and only survives due to massive subsidies and bailouts for the chosen ones who've toe'ed the "correct" line. The rest are either gone, or rely on reruns and tourist appeal. If it wasn't for Harry Potter and Paddington Bear several major theatres would be gone, probably, like the Trocadero in Piccadilly, turned into another bloody mosque and flashpoint for fuckwits, coloured-haired snot-hanger-nose-ringed Islingtonistas, London's biggest weekly draw... Aided and abetted by the title collecting Mayor Sir Lord King Caliph-wannabe Emperor of London Sadiq Khanage and his MetPlod Gestapo sock-puppet Rowley another undeserving Shite-of-the-Realm.
Theatre land is all but dead, weeded out on a tsunami of mediocre junk, and reflected in virtually every town and city throughout the country.
Rant over, until the next one.
I wonder if the John Major play will include his dalliance with Edwina Currie? Will there be nudity? If so, I'm definitely staying away!
