I think the first one is a victim of political correctness. Initially it referred to the teacher as she until someone pointed out that they must be used instead. So they can be both singular and plural, determined by was and were... oh no, I'm going mad thinking about it.

1. Assume they weren't teachers of English.
2. Depending on who you go with, these trips can be a pain in the arse.

I've done boating on the Norfolk Broads and it was great fun. No butt secs involved.
