A Device That Could Only Be Thought Up in Britain In 2026

Commenters have suggested that they are specially designed to prevent suicide by hanging, and I can believe it, because it’s typical of the NHS to install something so utterly useless, rather than simply have no hook on the doors at all.

I shudder to think how much they cost!

Well I would guess someone suggested that they remove the hooks but someone else insisted we must have some so they put in these useless things. Cost doesn't enter into it because it isn't their money. It is yours and they don't care.

Presumably to replace the originals as so many people failed by the "envy of the world" hanged themselves in despair.
On a similar note, the NHS is either risk-averse" or uncaring (take your choice of either or both) that they won't even clean and/or cut a patient's overgrown fingernails. They state "health and safety".
I'm surprised they haven't banned cutlery yet.

Note too that rather than replace the floppy rubber hook, the put the metal one next to it.
Presumably the worksheet only stated to put up the latest hook, not to remove the old one.
Better not complain and point out the bleeding obvious, as that would trigger a strike that would paralyze the place.

Give them time they serve such hideous food cutlery isn’t required!

Which would probably do more for the health of the general population than anything else
