A group of retired Gurkhas fighting for the right to settle in Britain have won their immigration test case at London's High Court.

Update: Over at 'Freeborn John', there's a link to a petition to support them in their fight, and I can't see anyone who deserves support more...

Your cited news report writes thus:
" . . the government argued that . . . Gurkhas discharged before that date [1997] were unlikely to have strong residential ties with the UK. That meant those who wanted to settle in the UK had to apply for British residence and could be refused and deported. The judgement could affect some 2,000 former Gurkhas who retired before 1997."
So the government refused to allow a mere 2,000 men and their families to settle here after their undoubted service to the country. Maybe somebody could tell us what the groups listed here as the greatest drain on the taxpayer, contribute to Britain (or anywhere for that matter). Under EU rules we have to allow in immigrants from Cyprus and Portugal (no guarantee, however that they are indigenous Cypriots or Portuguese and not just passing through) but the government's apparently happy to let the others in without demur.

That's the bit that really, really rankles. By any standards of honour, we owe these people for their service.
