This is the first image showing what a once notorious London council estate known as a "muggers' paradise" will look like.Interesting ‘before and after’, eh?BeforeAfterThe development will see 2,500 homes built on the site of the Heygate estate as part of a £1.5 billion revamp of Elephant and Castle.
But the real difference is in the inhabitants, not the bricks and mortar:
Of the 2,500 new homes, 25 per cent will be classed as "affordable", compared with the 1,260 council flats and houses they replace.Admittedly, in London, with its transport links, it might just make it the tempting waterhole in the urban jungle, attracting the herd animals for the convenience of the predators.

Get yer fresh unaffordable flats here! Onna stick!
(and whilst you're at it, rename the place to 'White Elephant and Expensive Rabbit Castle')
I do these kind of images for a living.
Rule 1. Put trees in the way.
Rule 2. Don't show cars.
Rule 3. Plenty of kids with balloons Rule 4. Choose an angle you'll never see in real life, so they can't check.
As per lovegoats comment - don't pay any attention to "artists impressions". They don't bear the slightest relation to reality...
It would be interesting to compare with the architect's drawings of the existing flats.
I suspect those had large trees, manicured lawns and happy people too - and probably looked very similar.
I see Dicky is worrying about housework today. He must have a very boring life.
That Gadget recently banned you from her blog, albeit on a temporary basis, is common knowledge. During that ban you were unable to exercise your daily habit of pouring numerous comments on the main plod blog. The effects of that ban have been quite startling, Julia.
What a dreadful thing it must be for any blogger to concede that plod are capable of manipulating their words. I am truly saddened to see your emergence as a turncoat puppet.
To sell out in this way was a huge betrayal of yourself and the frank commenters who, until recently, gave years of loyal patronage here. You know the names of those who have deserted you.
A deserved hardcore of commenters are now led by the despicable WPC Jade D and the certifiable Ranter.
Your sell-out impacts negatively upon the wider world of free expression and makes this blog worthless.
And he's back under another name.
Don't you dare allow people to post different opinions on here.
Julia, this should be exclusively for Melvins use (and one other moron).
Flounce off Melvin.
Love from despicable Jaded.
Aaah! That old chestnut, so admirably and eloquently explained by the great Dalrymple, "Do sties make pigs, or do pigs make sties?"
We know the answer, eh, chums?
Lefties always believe in free speech,as long as you agree with them.If you have the cheek to disagree then you are hounded and insulted. It must really being hurting him being banned from Gadget. All those people missing his wit and repartee as well as the patronising correction of grammar and spelling.
Personally I don't mind constructive criticism of my profession. We are not perfect,I have never claimed that.
But I do accept that people disagree with me.I don't get the hump when they do and accuse them of "trolling" and such-like.
Two things do annoy me though. One is when you have had a bad experience from one of us and you assume we are all the same.I don't stereo-type about groups and neither should you.
Secondly-when someone assumes they speak for the whole public with their views. You don't,you speak for yourself and you probably have some sycophantic mates that kiss your arse.I write my own opinion and don't represent the whole force (whoops service).
Sorry for the rant but it's been a long day. Those wheelchair users don't tip themselves out you know!
Anyway back to the blog post in question-I remember the Heygate in it's prime.
My first reporting Sergeant was showing me round an equally bad estate once which was having some money spent on it,i.e down the drain-and he said "you could put these people in Buckingham Palace and they would still crap in the bath".....years later visiting a house in lovely Downham (notorious estate in Lewisham borough)some druggies were actually crapping in the bath as they had blocked the toilet and couldn't be bothered to fix it.I cannot describe the smell.
"...rename the place to 'White Elephant and Expensive Rabbit Castle'"
Quite!
"I do these kind of images for a living."
And there's always someone reading on the grass! Ever notice that..? ;)
"It would be interesting to compare with the architect's drawings of the existing flats.

I bet they did!
"I see Dicky is worrying about housework today. He must have a very boring life."
Yeah, I zap him when I catch him. He'll get bored of it before I do!
"I am truly saddened to see your emergence as a turncoat puppet. "
Translation into English, anyone? Or hell, I'll settle for a translation into 'sane'...
"Aaah! That old chestnut, so admirably and eloquently explained by the great Dalrymple, "Do sties make pigs, or do pigs make sties?""
I do like that one! Very apt.
"...some druggies were actually crapping in the bath as they had blocked the toilet and couldn't be bothered to fix it."
I do have a lot to be grateful for, when I'm watching some cop documentary. Mostly, it's that they haven't yet invented Smell-O-Vision.
It'll probably be next, after they perfect 3D... :(
Yes, I'm sure lots of middle-aged white couples will be sitting on the grass, enjoying the sun - just as they do in front of tower blocks all over South London !
I think half a dozen "youths" on bicycles too small for them would be more realistic.
