Lorraine Sutton, who owns the Duke’s Head pub in the village, said: “I played on that land as a child and for the past 16 years we’ve walked there with no problems.
“Kids play football there and build camps - it’s quite social, with dog walkers and mums meeting up there.
“Now it looks like the farmer’s just ripped the land up in an angry temper.Gosh. Yes. I wonder why...
“It’s a great shame.”And also a great chance for some angry hyperbole:
"...the hole is right by the football goalposts - a child is going to fall down it, and dog walkers are afraid to let their dogs off."It's fair to say it's not exactly the biggest hole I've ever seen. It's not going to rate highly on Mark Wadsworth's collection of sinkholes. In fact, I'm pretty sure my garden pond's deeper!
So why anyone should worry about a child falling in when it isn't even full of water, god only knows...
And....why would people be afraid to let their dogs off? Has the farmer installed a Sarlacc at the bottom, or something?
“There’s no kind of barrier and no signs,” Stephen Hocking of Station Road added./facepalm
One for Leg-Iron's collection, there...

How do these people manage to get up their own stairs to bed at night.
A Sarlacc! You owe me a new keyboard :-)
it’s quite social, with doggers and mums meeting up there.
I'll bet it is! .. oh wait though .. Dog Walkers
Sorry :0p
There isn't a day goes by it seems when people of a certain age recall with delight how they played on bombsites, set fire to things...big things, like cars with full petrol tanks etc. What is the matter with these people? Why are they always whinging chavs going on about 'the cheeeldren'. Maybe the OWNER of the land just got pissed off with the lack of modern day manners and traditional behaviour of the mums and dogs.
Instead of all the wailing and gnashing of teeth, has anyone thought to ask the owner to say why or even to fill it in again and if it is common land then why haven't they filled it in themselves?
Cue Richard Littlejohn in the Fail this morning
