Moss Irsan, 29, almost lost his arm in the incident which was witnessed by dozens of families. He suffered serious head, arm and leg injuries and was airlifted to hospital.
His friend, 21-year-old Caner Sanli, was attacked too but escaped unharmed. The pair were set upon by a group armed with baseball bats, a crowbar and an axe after they stopped at a popular park in Grays, Essex.Grays. Oh. Say no more.
The flakes aren't just on the cones in Grays.
Gives a new meaning to the phrase 'I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!' though.
‘Moss will never work in an ice cream van again. He fears what could happen.’He'd better stay away from Glasgow then...

Given the level of violence involved in these 'ice cream wars' You'd almost think there was something else going on besides who had the better pitch.
but surely that's just an old wives tale?

See what happens when you disarm the public?
Aha! "Leg injuries". SOUNDS like he was defeated in the end.
I used to live in Grays when I worked in Tilbury Docks. We used to say that Grays is the arsehole of the universe but Tilbury's 2 inches up it.

So the assailants message came over strong and clear.
As an American I'm always amazed at how common baseball bats are used in Europe for violent purposes.
One, how easy is it to buy one? Do they sell them at every sporting goods store? If they did, it would be pretty easy to tell if the buyer of said bat was a real baseball player versus just some local thug. (Just ask them if they play shortstop. Clueless look = local thug.)
Two, do they use metal or wooden bats. In the USA they use metal bats up to and including college level but in the pros (including the minor leagues) it's strictly wood. (They used to ash but more and more players use maple. Maple has better "whip" action but have a tendency to explode more often.)

Three, maybe if we sent some balls and gloves over they might actually start to play baseball, a nice peaceful little game.

Rounders it is called.
Don't know why the Yanks make such a big thing out of a wee girlys school yard game.

Well, it IS Grays...
"So the assailants message came over strong and clear."
Indeed!
"As an American I'm always amazed at how common baseball bats are used in Europe for violent purposes. "
Well, they are much easier to wield at an assailant or victim than a cricket bat! And with rounders being popular, they are pretty easy to come by.
