Aren’t All Prisons ‘Open’ When You Have Staff Like This?

Not quite sure why the ‘Daily Fail’ is in a tizzy over the number of murderers held in open prisons.

After all, the normal prisons don’t appear to be that much more secure:

Bungling warders have freed a drug dealer from a top-security jail – despite him telling them he was supposed to be kept inside.

Well, fair enough, I suppose. Would you believe some old lag? On anything?

Though the fact that he was saying ‘No, no, I’m not supposed to be released..’ might be expected to ring some vague bell in even the dimmest warden, shouldn’t it?

The judge wasn’t best pleased, calling it ‘quite extraordinary’.

And they aren’t in a hurry to remedy their mistake:

Prosecutors made no application for an arrest warrant to return him back to custody.
Instead, lawyers from both sides are now waiting to see if he turns up to learn his fate.

Is there any branch of the public sector that works?

Judge Bolton ordered an answer from Durham Prison be ready for the December 9 sentencing hearing.

That answer to be something other than ‘We’re bungling clowns, your honour..’, one hopes…
