"I'm so surprised it happened next to the police station..."

Really? I'm not:
A 28-year-old woman is fighting for her life after she was shot near the entrance to Walthamstow Police Station.

The woman was sitting in a parked car outside the building in Forest Road, which was open at the time, when she was hit just before 9.30pm last night (Sunday).

At least one other man was in the vehicle at the time.
A Woman Of No Appearance? Well, there's a bit of a clue:
The Metropolitan Police's Trident Unit, which focuses on gun crime in the black community, is investigating.

Things may be different in Walthamstow but Huddersfield's safe policing policy keeps officers safely indoors and extends to closing down any particularly hazardous police stations.

From the comment thread of the linked newspaper article:

"I am not surprised as police got shot at with a machine gun about 2 years outside Leytonstone Police station. Their response was to shut up shop and leg it as it was too dangerous there. Now we know that the place is a derelict site occupied by squatters."

Jesus wept.

Which, as Edition points out, isn't so very different in the south after all!
