'The only reason I can think of for having it there is to stop cars crashing into pedestrians...'

'...and screw them! I want to be able to cycle at top speed without looking where I'm going!':
One rider, Michael Scott, claims the barrier could cause a serious crash - although it is visible for 20 feet.
So look up occasionally. It'll make a nice change for you.

Looking at the pictures, it appears the cycle lane only STARTS 20m up the road on the corner, so there's really no excuse for running into the barrier.

This is an inspired idea, even if it was installed accidentally! All pavements should have part-barriers fitted at regular intervals, to interrupt the illegal use of them by idiotic cyclists. Or maybe grooves along the pavements, just wide enough to trap a cycle tyre...

Last night in the gloaming I saw one of these twits, with no lights, riding on the pavement. He protested that it was unsafe for him to use the road, as he had no lights - so two offences instead of one!

Or, grids (like cattle/sheep grids around Dartmoor but with narrower spacings), which would allow pedestrians to pass but stop the illegals using the pavements!

Another pompous twat on a bike. Just filter into the road, you moron. Better that he clatters into the barrier rather than mow over a child on that spur of ground where the crossing sticks out.

Ooops! I was simply surfing for impartial cycling news but somehow managed to land here.

Cyclists are living proof of the old saying: "Give them an inch and they'll take a pavement."

How many lycra-clad cyclists does it take to change a light-bulb?

Just one - who holds it and the whole world revolves around them.

And in a nice Twofer, it'd mean the idiots walking along texting would come a cropper too.

Bit harsh on the blind, though.

It must be something about the type of bike. Or maybe it's the Lycra?

Have you read about the Tower Hill closure? That's not even a joke any more!
