You didn't link to the article? "even today's police" But aren't you being a little unfair towards the Police, for once? I'm sure the coppers in the car would have sat there all night if they thought the killer was somewhere near by but no doubt they were TOLD to go arrest someone really dangerous who'd posted rude words on twatter or fecesbook. Or maybe some deranged woman had walked into the local nick claiming aliens touched her bottom in 1874....you know, SERIOUS crime. Pretty sure Policemen have to go where they are told to by the politicians....sorry I mean Senior Officers.
