(Not) Keeping Death Off The Roads…

A great-grandmother who sparked a 10mph police chase can get behind the wheel again after her driving ban was overturned.
Yup, it’s this case.
...at a hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court, she successfully appealed the sentence, claiming it was too harsh.

A spokesman for the Crown Prosecution Service said her 12 month driving ban had been replaced with eight penalty points, allowing her to drive her Ford Fiesta again.
Perhaps she should be given the job of court chauffeur for the bewigged fools who think the ban was ‘too harsh’?

I mean, why should everyone else have to live with the risk, yet not them?

Oh, but you forget - the authorities don't care how slowly you drive, as this will reduce or even remove the risk of injury suffered in any subsequent accident.

I think we will yet see the return of a man (sorry, person) walking in front carrying a red flag...

From the comments: "....then these police resources could be used for something more urgent rather than old people draining every resource in the country!"

Gerontophobism: a permissble predjudice!

Not really...it's just that on the internet people are brave enough to say what they really think. The authorities will soon put stop to that though ;)

Suggestions that Great Granny's defensive speed had infuriated police by checkmating the PIT Maneuver, should not mar the celebrations.

Reasonable motorists have waited patiently for an opportunity to support the actions of traffic police.

I presume she drives at 10 miles an hour because she is aware she isn't aware of other road users (if you see what I mean), which might explain why being followed by a police car for 17 miles was beyond her awareness.

Perhaps then she ought to think about retiring from the hectic drama of motoring. Plus, her petrol bill must be huge. Driving everywhere in first gear would drink that expensive liquid.

I'm surprised she didn't try and use the Craggy island Version of 'Speed' defence, that there was a bomb on board and if she exceeded 10 MPH it would detonate. No worse than some of the other examples of awful mitigation our hostess has flagged up this week!

did she kill anybody or just annoy the police?

Give 'em time! With the proliferation of 20mph zones, we're getting there...

"I presume she drives at 10 miles an hour because she is aware she isn't aware of other road users (if you see what I mean)..."

I do. But it's not just the speed: "Colchester Magistrates’ Court heard she drove at between 10mph and 20mph from Thorpe, where she went around a roundabout the wrong way, to the A12 at Marks Tey."

That's a little more hair-raising!

"did she kill anybody or just annoy the police?"

She had the potential to kill herself and others and do more than just annoy the police...

Don't talk to me about ferking 20mph zones. I'm living the nightmare!

Silver lining - because the speed limit was imposed by Lancashire County Council (without any effing consultation whatsoeffingever) the traffic fuzz are refusing to police the new zone. Heh.

So you have an old age pensioner going very slowly. You also have the recent case of an old age pensioner driving on the pavement and killing a teenager. The common aspect? Old people who know that they are dangerous drivers but who refuse to accept it and carry on driving.
