What Is It With Southend Signwriters..?

Are they all illiterate, or does it just seem like it?

Many of these shops are run by Asians who are recent immigrants, I suspect. I've bought cellphone and laptop chargers from such places.

Have you considered that its not that the sign writers of Southend are illiterate, its that nowadays one often purchases signs online, and any mistakes are those made by the purchaser, everything being done by electronic means, with no human proof reading after the purchaser inputs their data? And thus its the business owners of Southend in general who are unable to spell, or proof read?

They’re not illiterate, just bloody minded.

They offer two services: the ‘Standard’, where they write down exactly what you gave them; and the ‘Deluxe’, where they will spellcheck for you.

Most businesses are too cheap to go for the ‘Deluxe’.

It gets one's attention, so I reckon it's deliberate.

Even if the originator is illiterate, surely the sign-making print shop must check spelling and grammar?

I used to visit a site that featured bad tattoos. One time a tattoo artist visited and left a comment so I asked him about tattoos that had poor grammar, spelling or punctuation. He said that he always pointed it out to them before starting the work but, nine times out of ten, they would insist on having it exactly as they had written it down.

But are the signwriters, as well..?

"..nowadays one often purchases signs online, and any mistakes are those made by the purchaser..."

Ah, and these places offer no editorial oversight? That's strange, don't they take any pride in their service?

Ah! Didn't think of that.
