Another Day, Another U-Turn On Green Idiocy...

The Government has backtracked on plans which would have required every shop, office or factory in England, including new and existing non-residential buildings, to have at least one electric car charger installed if they have a car park for 20 cars or more.
But the Department for Transport (DfT) has now said it will only be compulsory for new or refurbished commercial premises.

Because businesses looked at the plans, at the potential cost, and responded with one voice:

Any competent Conservative government would have factored in this before announcing it.
According to a response to a consultation the DfT has said the move comes after fears over the costs for businesses.

What a shame we don't appear to have one of those...

There is nothing green about electric cars anyway. If the government had exercised due diligence before embarking on their insane policies they would know that.

@ Stonyground, you should know the problem with government and the civil service is that they don't have any engineers in their ranks so all they go on is feelings not facts.

The whole 'green new deal' is a load of garbage because we need more CO2 in the atmosphere to increase the growing of crops, not less. No matter how you look at it the unreliable renewables can't provide the energy the country needs to go forward.

Any competent Conservative government would have thought this through, sadly we have the most incompetent, heartless fake Conservative government I have ever seen.

If it's solely to meet a politically driven dictat, that guarantees the lowest possible cost, lowest possible spec kit will be fitted. All different types as well no doubt (one hopes)

Of course, part of the "green" fascism has been the removal of car parking spaces. Now parking spaces are not only compulsory, but they have to have low grade sockets next to them.

"where can I plug my tossler in my man?"

"Over there. Away from the real cars, just in case it catches fire. With luck in 5 hours you might have enough charge to move the ton of strip mined lithium as far as the main gate. Can we get you a (diesel) taxi?"

@Mark:
Don't laugh too loudly - I was talking with a fireman (yes, a male whose task is "Fire & Rescue") about electric cars and the comment was that if they are called to such a fire they will make sure that everyone is safe and stand well back - "light blue touch-paper" came to mind.

@Nemesis

These things catching fire is not funny at all. It shouldn't happen, full stop, but it does.

Fast charging of batteries is not something that should be done lightly. Ramming high current/voltage into a battery means a lot of the energy manifests itself as heat. It should not be done at all really unless there is a compelling reason.

But a main plank of the pretence that these toys can replace real cars, is precisely this, so called "fast" charging and that it will be widely available and be problem free. Hundreds of amps/volts time tens or hundreds of thousands each and every day- forget the fact that the grid can't and won't be able to deliver this on anything like the scale required - that is another matter (as is the spectacularly increased demand for lithium etc which can't be met).

When this mis-selling scandal hit the fan, as it will as sure as night follows day, I suspect that "fast charging" will be the richest seam for the lawyers.

No, so why are so many people utterly hoodwinked about them?

"...sadly we have the most incompetent, heartless fake Conservative government I have ever seen."

And I don't think 'Operation Red Meat' is going to turn round this tanker in time...

""Over there. Away from the real cars, just in case it catches fire. With luck in 5 hours you might have enough charge to move the ton of strip mined lithium as far as the main gate. Can we get you a (diesel) taxi?""

😂

The potential for catastrophe is obvious!
