I wonder, in that neck of the woods, if the wife would have been justified in returning fire?
The main argument against arming the UK police is the utter incompetence of the people who are the police these days. Brightest and best it certainly isn't. If you gave the average UK plod a gun there'd be corpses everywhere, every time they walked down a dark alley and got spooked by someone walking the other way they'd be firing away. Especially the women I suspect. They'd be particularly trigger happy.
Let the Army deal with situations requiring an armed response. Accidental shootings would be kept to a minimum if guns were confined to the military. Equipping dumb plod with anything more hazardous than a blunt pencil, is courting trouble.
It's far more acceptable when plod turn up on a wrong doorstep with the wrong intentions.
