A Recipe For Disaster…

Ofsted is to urge schools to “pause” inspections that appear to be damaging the mental health of their staff, as part of its formal response to the death of headteacher Ruth Perry.

One mentally-unstable woman kills herself over a trivial matter, and suddenly the whole world stands still?

But Perry’s family and school leaders said they were disappointed that neither the Department for Education’s nor Ofsted’s responses addressed the use of single-phrase judgments such as “inadequate” to grade schools, which they said was an impediment to real reform.

You can't appease these people, and you shouldn't even try...

“As the new chief inspector, I am determined to do everything in my power to prevent such tragedies in the futures,” said Oliver, who took over as head of Ofsted in the new year. He added: “We must carry out our role in a way that is sensitive to the pressures faced by leaders and staff, without losing our focus on children and learners.”

You've made yourself a hostage to fortune, because you can now be delayed by claims that you cannot disprove, because even asking for medical evidence of any 'stress' will be seen as exacerbating it.

Both the National Association of Head Teachers and the Association of School and College Leaders said Ofsted’s proposals were positive steps but did not fully address their concerns.
“This must be the beginning of a process for Ofsted and the government to improve the way in which schools and colleges are inspected – one that makes the system fairer, less punitive and more supportive,” said Geoff Barton, ASCL’s general secretary.

In any grading system, someone has to come last. I suppose it was inevitable the 'all must have prizes!' ethos would be used for the teachers as well as the pupils.

"But It's Worked So Well In Comprehensive Education!"

The number of guide dog owners in the UK has declined from more than 5,000 in 2017 to 3,695 in 2022, despite demand remaining stable, according to an open letter written to the heads of Guide Dogs UK.

And he presumably knows his onions Labradors...

Alan Brooks, who has won two major awards for his work with guide dogs over 50 years, including setting up training programmes in Europe and leadership roles at Guide Dogs UK.

So, where is it all going wrong suddenly?

“The new programme isn’t working. Basically, the system is a non-punishment system, so you’re not even allowed to say no to a dog in a firm voice if it does something wrong – as a result dogs aren’t getting through the training programme and the population of guide dog owners has dropped by 25%,” he said, adding that he believes a rewards-based system works only for certain personalities of dog.

Ah. The 'no punishment or consequences for bad behaviours' that's turned our schools into the models of good behaviour they are?

He said that many knowledgable training staff and puppy-walking volunteers he had spoken to thought Step was “ineffective and their efforts are wasted”, leading them to become “demotivated and demoralised”.

And the charity relies on them. So what does it have to say for itself?

Noting that there are differing views on training dogs, Guide Dogs UK defended its methods as “based on the highest level of dog welfare and prioritise the wellbeing and safety of the guide dog and its owner”.

Typical of any modern organisation; dig in, double down, never admit you could have got it wrong...

“We are proud to use ethical, evidence-based practices which maintain the highest level of dog welfare. We make no apologies for eliminating physical punishment or techniques which are proven to cause fear and stress to dogs. Our firm and unwavering view is that society has progressed and that we must move with the times.”

Ah, yes, 'progress'. The watchword of the moment. And yet...didn't this chap have something to say about words?

There Are No Winners...

A school is changing how it picks players for its football team.

OK, I'm not the greatest football fan, and my knowledge of the offside rule is non-existent, but...don't you pick the best players for each position?

I mean, how else could it be done?

Saltdean Primary School has announced that instead of having trials to select players for its football team, they will pick players with a range of footballing abilities. Where teams are over-subscribed, players will be picked out of a hat.

Ha ha ha ha ha...!

Oh, wait. They're serious?

One concerned parent, who did not wish to be named, said: “My child was really upset. He plays outside of school but he wants to represent the school.
“It feels like if you’re achieving in sport there’s no celebration of that. There’s a handful of parents who feel very strongly about this.
“When you think of the success of the Lionesses this year it doesn’t make sense.”

Only a handful of parents are concerned? That's, frankly, far more concerning than the bonkers woke decision by the school, isn't it?
