A mum-of-five was forced to spend a night in a police cell after she was caught shoplifting in a Birmingham Iceland store, a court heard.

Yes, those are consequences of being caught stealing though not often enough these days for our diverse enrichers…

Daniella Costea felt she 'had no other option' when she hid £150 worth of items, such as medicines and food, in her skirt to steal on Monday, June 29.

That must be some skirt! 

The 34-year-old mum 'suffered a loss of liberty' as she was arrested and spent 16 hours in police custody, Birmingham Magistrates' Court heard this week.

Costea pleaded guilty to theft on Tuesday (July 21) and was issued a fine by the court - which heard "money was extremely tight" for the family.

And she’ll no doubt steal again to pay the fine! Hmm, it’s almost like the magistrates hadn’t thought of that, eh, Reader? 

The chair of the Magistrates' told her: "It turns out this wasn't your finest hour. We recognise that you spent a night in a police station which must have been quite an unpleasant experience for you." She must now pay £197 to the court - including the £80 fine.

No, chairman, it’d be an unpleasant experience for you and your fellow middle class compatriots on the bench, but for her, it’s a work-related accident.

The sergeant’s firefighter husband “did not question paternity” when she suddenly announced she was pregnant in January 2022, a gross misconduct hearing was told.But in June of the following year, he logged on to the “doggy cam” while at work and saw her talking to a male colleague on FaceTime. Mr Simmons found Officer A wilfully provided false information at the Registry Office about her daughter’s father on November 17, 2022 and again on April 14, 2023 after the marriage. After finding discreditable conduct proved at a gross misconduct level, she was dismissed without notice.

Today after a two-day sentencing hearing at Aylesbury Crown Court, Judge Sheridan said: 'Not one of the defendants in this case should ever be given a licence to breed animals.'

Oh, bless! Judge Sheridan thinks this would make a blind bit of difference!  

'The effects referred to in this case cannot be regarded by the public as anything other than utterly abhorrent.

'This is a trade in cruelty and misery for the animals and the human beings who sought to buy them. The protection of the public must be foremost in my mind.

'This is a massive industry and that is all it is, an industry of misery.'

It's the only sort of 'work' they are ever likely to indulge in.

Macharia, who has received repeated letters demanding he pay the council tax, has no income and while his application is considered, is surviving on handouts from his 69-year-old mother, Jacinta, who is working extra shifts as an agency nurse. She suffers from arthritis and lives in sheltered housing.

She is paying Macharia’s £365 monthly rent plus bills while he waits to hear from the Home Office about his case.

Macharia has been in the UK since 2009, arriving on a student visa. He has twice been granted extensions to remain, as a student and then as a highly skilled migrant.

He claimed asylum in May 2016, arguing that he would be persecuted in Kenya where homosexual activity is illegal.

He's played the system like a fiddle. There may well be hard luck cases out there, but the progressive press unerringly picks the wrong ones.

'Sunday Times' writer on a plane, realising there's a detainee being deported:

I did not stage a passenger revolt. Earlier this year holidaymakers had stopped a plane taking off with a Somali on board, only to discover he was a gang rapist. I had no interest in halting the deportation of a criminal, but I was determined to hear his story.

And 'story' is rather more accurate than she intended:

His name was Adnan Hashi, he said, and he had turned 20 just a few weeks previously. He claimed he was being deported for “weed”; after I scoffed, he admitted it was for selling class-A drugs.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice....

Hashi said he had been living in Britain since the age of six. He insisted he had no relatives in Somalia and no connections there.

Yeah, he's deffo telling the truth this time, love!

He had a strong south London accent and was plainly terrified.

And that means he shouldn't be deported?

...my sympathy was tempered by the knowledge that Hashi had broken the law. How many lives had been ruined by the drugs he sold?

Hurrah! Is the light finally dawning? Well, no. Because she got a fellow hack to do some digging.

The full facts disturbed me. It emerged that Hashi was only 17, a minor, when he was arrested. For as long as he can remember, he has felt British and knows no other way of life. His right to appeal appears to have been bungled by the Home Office (no surprise to those who are familiar with its immigration service). In my view Hashi has not been deported. He has been transported to an alien, conflict-ridden land from which he cannot return.

If only that were true! But the UKBF hasn't exactly proven competent at this in the past...

Hashi was old enough to know that drug-dealing was wrong. But, at 17, did he understand that the consequences for a refugee would be so severe? I would be interested to hear readers’ views.
