Jeremy Hunt will vow to 'get Britain growing' later today as he unveils the country's 'biggest ever' business tax cut and new plans to ease the burden on working families.
Publishing his Autumn Statement on the economy, the Chancellor will try to rebuild the Tories' reputation as a low-tax party with a targeted package of measures aimed at helping both business and families.....it's not going to change anything.
The Chancellor will say that ministers are charting a new course on the economy and rejecting 'big government' in the wake of the Covid pandemic and a global spike in energy prices, which have driven both Government borrowing and the tax burden to record levels.
My prediction is that government won't shrink, and will in fact get even bigger.

Too little, too late. The Tories have spent 13 years trashing their reputation. A few cynical tax cuts in the run up to a general election isn't going to change people's minds.

They should have been doing this stuff the minute that they took office years ago. Only now have they woken up to the fact that Conservative voters actually expect to get a Conservative government when they vote them in? In any case, like you, I simply don't believe anything that they say.

Before they do anything else they need to appoint a Shrinking Tsar, along with a small army of staff. After twenty years they will conclude that there is no room for shrinkage but they assure us that they will stick to their task for another twenty years.
It is a complete "Given" that each and every bureaucracy will concentrate much more on expanding its powers and influence than doing anything else. Governments, all Governments, are guilty of this failing. It is inherent in their very composition.

And I can't honestly say we'll be that much worse off! The best we can hope for is a hung Parliament, though right now, I'd prefer to see a hanged one.
