Why Do Our Public Servants Express ‘Sympathy’…

…for people who clearly don’t deserve it?
A father who killed a burglar by attacking him with a meat cleaver was "justified", a Notts coroner has ruled.
Given the circumstances, ‘
fully justified’ would be more appropriate:
Steven Shaw and his brother Craig broke into a house in Morrell Bank on the Bestwood Estate on March 31 last year.

In a "
harrowing and brutal" attack, which lasted between 10 and 15 minutes, they assaulted taxi driver Xiaopeng Wang and his wife, and also left the couple's baby injured.

The violence only stopped when Mr Wang
found a meat clever and hit Mr Shaw with it, causing a "sharp force trauma" to his head.
I’m a bit surprised it killed him, I’d have thought his brains were in the other end…
At Mr Shaw's inquest yesterday, Notts Coroner Mairin Casey recorded a verdict of lawful killing and said: "The defensive action taken by Mr Wang was proportionate and justified."
And of great benefit to the local community. What a pity coroners can’t award money out of the poorbox like judges can!
She also said that the attack was "random" – the Shaw brothers had never before met the Wangs – and that the motive for the break-in was a financial one.
Ah, yes, ‘brothers’ plural. What happened to the other one?
A violent burglar whose brother was killed during a break-in when a terrified householder fought back with a meat cleaver has been jailed for eight and a half years.
Not enough. Not nearly enough…
Craig Shaw, 21, was told that the death of his brother Steven was no mitigation for the "sustained and brutal" assaults on a couple who feared for their lives.
I…

Wait. What? Who the hell would even think that it might be, FFS?!?
After the hearing, Detective Chief Inspector Tony Heydon said: "This has been a very unusual and traumatic case for all involved. Whatever the circumstances that led to this incident, the plain fact is that a man has died and many people on all sides have been left terribly affected by what has happened."
‘A man has died’…

Now, I’m not one of those ‘Any man’s death diminishes me…’ bleeding hearts, but even they might be looking askance at that one!

Because some people expect it?

Whilst I feel sorry for the guy, I just don't understand his 'disappointment' at not having a stream of vote hungry politicos knocking on your door at a difficult time in you and your family's life? Or is it a kultural ting - respeck and dat?

The father of a murdered teenager is
“disappointed and amazed” that he has still not heard from Ken Livingstone five
weeks after the death of his son.

Detective Chief Inspector Tony Heydon said: "...the plain fact is that a man has died..."

Said 'man' having been a violent intruder who participated in an attack which injured a baby.

I'm not sure 'burglar' is the right word for someone who breaks in to do something like this.

How about the police just stick to the plain facts, as in '...the plain fact is that a violent scumbag has died, a scumbag who had proved he posed a very serious threat to the whole family'?

No mitigation? In the states he'd be facing a murder charge!

I suspect it's annoyance that the Kenny isn't leaping on the bandwagon. For once, he did something right!

"How about the police just stick to the plain facts, as in '...the plain fact is that a violent scumbag has died, a scumbag who had proved he posed a very serious threat to the whole family'?"

I would love to see someone say that, a la Gene Hunt!

"Bestwood..."

Wow! There's a blast from the past...

I don't know the area at all. I didn't realise just how awful it was.

"No mitigation? In the states he'd be facing a murder charge!"

Who would?

To be fair to both father and to Ken, there's an election campaign under way in which the media are playing their full part (cf Andrew Gilligan). I may be wrong, but this story has a slightly manufactured air.

"And have you heard personally from any political figures, for example Ken Livingstone, who's talked a lot about London crime?"

"No"

"Aren't you disappointed, indeed amazed, by that?"

(Choking up, thinking about his forgotten son) "Yes".
