I Think I've Spotted This Year's 'Van Helsing'!

It's got it all, hasn't it?

Medieval high-tech weaponry: check!
CGI monsters a go go: check!
Leading man 'o the moment: check!

Please god, we'll at least be spared the comedy monk sidekick..?

AAARGH

Nice plot and everything, plus presumably we are spared the slushy scene where the leading characters finally fall in love etc, but

The names are "Hänsel and Gretel" which are pronounced:

"Henzel" and "Greatle" (if you pronounce "great" with a northern accent".

The's boy's name is the "baby" version of "Hans" (itself short for Johannes) and so it gets an umlaut which turns the "a" more into an "e" sound and an "l" stuck at the end.

"Gretel" is short for "Margaret" = "Greta" = "Gretel" (again with the extra "l" at the end".

i.e. by the time they'd grown up, they'd be called "Hans and Greta" anyway.

It look like it is probably played at toungue in cheek as opposed to Van Helsing

There's a Red Band trailer over at
I09 which seems to suggest this

Thank god David Lynch isn't directing, or maybe we wouldn't!

Yes, but remember, this is a film from the people who thought 'License to Kill' was a better title because the home audience wouldn't understand the term 'Revoked'...

"There's a Red Band trailer over at I09..."

Ah, yes, I saw that one just after I'd cued up this post. They might be on a sticky wicket there - the audience doesn't always take to such archness.

JM, fascinating link. A bit like "The Madness of King George III" losing the "III" in the USA in case they thought it was part 3 of a series.

I'm afraid it's no Van Helsing, not quite camp enough. Its watchable for a Saturday night DVD, but that's about it
