Over the Easter Bank Holiday, these signs started appearing on pavements all around Southend, in green or blue or red, depending on pavement type.
Is it me, or is this the equivalent of a waved white flag to the two-wheeled menace?
Have they given up expecting people to use the many cycle lanes laid out for them, and are now simply resorting to this pathetic appeal for decency that – if they were
capable of it – wouldn’t even be necessary?

It look like the lycra clad loons are on the offensive and trying to get their way. All that is needed is pedestrians to carry strong 'walking sticks front wheel for use of' and use them.
There 'might' be some point if the roads are very narrow and there are no cycle lanes but even then they should get off and walk like everyone else.
What dash rotten luck to have been born in the Universe where cycling is not a capital offence, JuliaM.
Cycling on the pavement is acceptable for pre teens.
Wonder who put the signs on the pavements?

As a 'lycra clad loon' I am not going to cycle on the pavement, it doesn't make sense and it isn't safe. Now you're average chav on a clapped out mountain bike will, or a sanctimonious twat who thinks that because they are on a bike they have some special rights.
For me there is a highway code and a law of the land, impose the law, if someone rides on a pavement fine them. If they clash with a pedestrian, fine them or more. Policemen being there to enforce the law would be a start.
C'mon, let's not get gloomy, have a laugh instead: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/32671418
It really will cheer you up!
Let's get down to brass tacks - buy a bagfull and accidently spill some - there's nothing these pavement terrors like more than mending punctures.
I understand cycling to work will be compulsory by Jan 2016 for all working in the Southend area - or was that me hallucinating?
Adults, who ought to know better, cycling on pavements are fair game. Simply allowing them no room forces them into the road. Infants, accompanied or not, are entitled by permission. My permission. I would not expect all people to grant that permission. How many of us grant permission to teenagers and adults?
I have a simple, robust and well tried philosophy. Please don't try to run me down with your bicycle in a pedestrian area, as an elbow in the throat often offends.
What is it with UK cyclists, it's almost fetishistic. The tight lycra, the clip on pedals, helmet cams, they have to have it all - I bet most of them zip themselves up in a suitcase when they get home. I used to love cycling, can't anymore with arthritis but these the lycra fetish packs really are arrogant wankers.
Highway Code, rule 64:
You MUST NOT cycle on a pavement.
And they even give a helpful reference:
Laws HA 1835 sect 72 & R(S)A 1984, sect 129
Settled, I think.
Next?
"All that is needed is pedestrians to carry strong 'walking sticks front wheel for use of' and use them."
Little Lucie's mum could have done with one...
"Cycling on the pavement is acceptable for pre teens."
I'ts hardly ever pre-teens, is it? It's burly blokes!
"Policemen being there to enforce the law would be a start."
Chance would be a fine thing!
"...or was that me hallucinating?"
;)
"...an elbow in the throat often offends."
Lol!
