"The Police Are The Public..."

...except when they're not:
Kevin Clarke, 35, died in police custody at Lewisham Hospital shortly after 4pm on March 9 following an incident earlier that afternoon in Polsted Road outside St Dunstan's College.
Mr Clarke was restrained as he appeared to be having a mental health crisis before ambulances arrived and his condition is reported to have deteriorated as paramedics arrived on the scene.
An investigation has been launched by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), with statements taken from nine police officers.
You'll note that they weren't arrested.

'You will note that they were not arrested.'

It would have been an astonishing first, JuliaM. We can be sure of judicial and police reform if the organised day ever arrives when a thousand PC Blakelocks pay the price of police brutality.

In other news this morning, a 78 yr old London pensioner was arrested after defending himself against two armed intruders, who forced the brave householder into his kitchen as they burgled his home in the early hours.

Yep, and no six months on police bail, homes being turned over or being stuck with five figure legal bills either.

Surely the real mystery is how the police intend to investigate without arresting these people? After all, we've been assured that only alternatives are to either immediately write off the death as one of those things, or to arrest everyone within a country mile.

It's almost like the 'Arrest Everyone' policy was an example of lawless thuggery serving no legitimate investigatory purpose whatsoever.

There is absolutely no need for the officers to be arrested. The reasons for arresting Joe Public who has killed someone (however unintended or lawfully) don't really apply to Police Officers. Their IDs are confirmed and they aren't likely to hie themselves to an non-extradition country.

It just goes to confirm what I said earlier that more people will die whilst being physically restrained than will be shot by police. The officers involved will probably have body worn video, there will be a computerised incident log, radio traffic which has probably been recorded and the original 999 call which will have been recorded so events are probably clear at an early stage.
Are you simply saying 'it's not fair' that the police officers were not arrested? The matter is being investigated and you will have to wait for the result. The police officers will have no more (or less) rights than any member of the public. The investigation will unfold and I would like to remind you that 'being held to account' does not mean being found guilty. At some time in the future the officers will have to account for their actions in a court of law.
I would add that officers involved in fatal incidents have been arrested and had their lives and careers put on hold, sometimes for many years.
I'll wait and see what unfolds with the Hither Green incident, if it's as described then it sounds righteous. Whatever happens this case will end up in a court, either Coroners Court or Crown court if the other miscreant is arrested so it's for the best that the matter is investigated 'to prove or disprove' any allegations.

Let's hope that the outstanding Met are working as hard to find the "runner" as they are to find evidence of Mr Osborn-Brooks' "crime".

We know who the runner is. He won't be on "the lamb" for long.
As predicted the scum dead burglar has been named and shamed. His previous is appalling and his whole family have been preying on pensioners all their worthless lives. Finally one fought back.
The papers will raise a storm with the cowardly CPS if the pensioner is charged.

@Jaded 'on the lam' not 'on the lamb'....unless he was from Norfolk where they still have a taste for such pastimes.

Gosh, Jaded. Your Freudian slip is showing. A Welsh father?

Yes, there's a kind of serendipity that must originate in Trek's 'Mirror Universe' sometimes...

"Surely the real mystery is how the police intend to investigate without arresting these people? After all, we've been assured that only alternatives are to either immediately write off the death as one of those things, or to arrest everyone within a country mile."

Spot on!

"There is absolutely no need for the officers to be arrested. The reasons for arresting Joe Public who has killed someone (however unintended or lawfully) don't really apply to Police Officers."

Then they should. 'The police are the public', remember?

"Are you simply saying 'it's not fair' that the police officers were not arrested?"

That, and 'sauce for the goose'.

"Rumour control has named the dead burglar. I know hm. He's no loss..."

Indeed he wasn't. And now that man is being advised not to return home for fear of reprisals from his scummy relatives BY THE POLICE THAT ARRESTED HIM FOR SELF DEFENCE!

If that doesn't make you angry, I don't know what will...

"@Jaded 'on the lam' not 'on the lamb'....unless he was from Norfolk where they still have a taste for such pastimes."

Heh!
