Rewatchable TV October: Babylon 5

The news that there's to be a reboot (maybe) of this amazing show did fill me with a bit of trepidation, it has to be said... it was truly a new sort of sci-fi saga when it launched in the early 90s, with a breadth and scope that was so very refreshing.

The five-year plan drafted out by its creator,  J. Michael Straczynski, helped it quickly become one of my favourite shows. And did I think I'd ever say that about a show often described as 'The UN - but in space!'..?

I tried it a couple of times but could never get into it
Remind me, did this one rip off Deep Space Nine, or was it the other way around?

Cue the obligatory LGBT non-white non-male lead character who saves the day, and is just all round a better person than anyone else (with as much smut, innuendo and PC indoctrination included as possible).

Cue even more wimmin kicking posterior (than it already had) whilst every white male character will, of course, become evil, incompetent, and oppressive (or all of the above).

Then of course "The Shadows" will 'have' to become "The Lights" so as not to 'promote raycism', or they'll just be misunderstood and really are merely trying to get their due reparations, by 'mostly peacefully' blowing up all those raycist planets (after stealing all the Air Jordan Hover-boots from their Footlockers), is all.

So, nope, not going to watch it.

I now cringe in dread whenever they announce a 'remake' of some favourite show, or the production of some "adaption" of a long enjoyed novel, as the one certainty (even more so than death and taxes) is that they 'will' utterly ruin it.

I'm feeling very ambivalent about this. On the one hand I'd like more B5 as it didn't go on long enough for my liking; on the other I simply can't imagine anything made in Current Era being other than a desecration. And also it presumably isn't possible to feature the Vorlons as they went 'beyond the rim'.

Bit of both...Ronald D. Moore had a finger in both pies. DS9 is still my favourite Trek, but I never warmed to Babylon 5

Other way round. And DS9 didn't have craft as perfect as the Starfuries.

Weren't they just X-Wing fighters?

I'm pretty sure 'UN in space' has been a theme in early SF novels for long before either was a glint in the producers' eyes...

I'll give it the same chance I gave 'Rings Of Power'... 😉

"Weren't they just X-Wing fighters?"
