Whitby? It's the most law-abiding place on earth and the one I was would seriously like to move to. I commend it to the house as a smashing place for a holiday. I'm going back in the Summer and I hope to make it for the Halloween bash.
That is because it is Goth Central and the place is dedicated to turning back the clock to 1880, where people promenade and have heartfelt discussions about un-dead poets. The food is good and there is a slightly Frenchified fin-de-siecle feel about the place. You just can't get in to trouble in Whitby; the pubs have divided themselves in to little enclaves where the bat symbol shows they are Goth Friendly, but I didn't notice any hostility anywhere else. Why would there be? The Goths have brought in tons of money and they are renovating the properties to bring out the Edwardian grandeur.
Also, Botham's of Whitby - bakers and tea rooms - is much better value than Betty's, which has got somewhat above itself just because Alan Bennett once had a maccaroon there.
Anyhow, if the police officers do meet any real vampires they'll need more than a taser.

As smoking and drinking bans move forward by stealthy, small increments, why shouldn't the Police State?
And there was me thinking that the bi-annual Goth Weekends were reasonably peaceful affairs.

Bugger. Someone's made the Dracula reference already.

I don't think I've been there for, ooooh, at least ten/twelve years, but when I saw this story, I thought: 'It can't possibly have changed that much!'
Ahh, Botham's. And the Magpie Cafe. Good times...
The punch and taser show - coming soon to a beach near you.
