"Beat the clock, ya gotta beat the clock.."

Some fun to be had in Plymouth:
A new type of crossing is up and running on Royal Parade.
Oh?
The signals, next to the Big Screen, were installed this week and count down to show pedestrians exactly how long they have to cross the road.
A green man still lights up when it is safe to cross, with a countdown before the red man appears to let people know they should clear the crossing.
Oh boy! That's not going to have some unforeseen consequences, is it?

Pah. If the cousins can understand them then even the most dopey of Brits should be able to.

They have these at Oxford Corcus on the diagonal crossings. The distance must be 20m, but still people start crossing when there's one second left on the clock.

You'll never stop people acting like fools. Still, this works for drivers, too - the amber flashing light is a signal to slow down and exercise caution, not accelerate.

Can't we just ferry passengers from pavement to pavement in armoured anti-tank vehicles equipped with gun-toting marines and have done with it ?

Then again some tv depictions of marines would have me crossing the road all day long...*ahem* :)
