” Suspicion fell on her because of her odd behaviour…”

Her odd name presumably raised no eyebrows?
Supermarket cashier She-Ra Batey stole more than £3,400 over a year to pay for a £2,200 holiday to Mexico.
She was caught by marked notes placed in tills by security staff at the Morrisons store in the Meteor Centre, Derby.
Now, if you’re expecting a six foot stunning & muscular blonde as a result of the name, well, all I can say is, click at your own risk!

Clearly, mum was a kid’s tv fan – I wonder if she has a brother called Morph..?
Mark Salt, mitigating, said his client had since been sacked and was now earning £270 per week as an agency worker.
And that’s relevant as mitigation how? Those are consequences
He said: "The money was not for a lavish lifestyle and she is a young lady who has stable accommodation with her partner who supports her.
"Her motivation for this was entirely financial because she got herself in so much debt. She accepts her financial management has been appalling."
Really? Well, she could always become an MP, where stealing other people’s money is perfectly normal behaviour.

The plea in mitigation is (technically) from an officer of the court which is what all lawyers are when appearing in court (or even AFAIAA not appearing in court). Although Mark Salt was there to defend his client, his greater responsibility as an officer of the court was to see justice done. That means that he was not there to bend the truth on behalf of his client in order to fool the magistrate into imposing a lighter penalty than the one appropriate to the gravity of the offence.

Anyway, Mark's plea stated that "the money was not for a lavish lifestyle". True - if you consider that a £2,200 holiday to Mexico is one of life's necessities if you live and work in Derby (or anywhere really). Whatever, he seems to have got her off. She won't be serving time and I wonder what "250 hours of unpaid work" will comprise. Not, I suspect, something particularly onerous.

However, I also suspect that the plea didn't have any effect whatsoever. It's probable that, given the general wetness of those exercising judicial authority, the magistrate would have handed down this slap on the wrist even if Mark hadn't been there.

"She?"

Amazingly, yes! I'm surprised the judge didn't ask for a DNA test...

What's needed is one of those old-fashioned judges who'd raise an eyebrow at that, then publicly reduce the errant barrister to a shivering wreck with a well-placed tirade from the bench.

"Hordack made her do it."

:D
