Only In Croydon…

A man who tried to steal a flower cart by hitching it to his horse and riding off has been fined more than £200.
*boggle*
Onlookers in Stavordale Road, Carshalton, were shocked when Smith arrived with his horse, a chestnut mare, and hooked her to the flower stall in broad daylight on June 26.
The cart, which belongs to florist Christopher Tucker, was dragged through a supermarket car park and down side alleys before police caught up with the 36-year-old and arrested him.
You won’t believe the excuse!
Defending Smith, Miss McClaren told the court he had recently split from his wife and was struggling to find work, carrying out odd jobs.
She said: “On this day the reason he took the cart was he thought he could make something from it – thought he could use it. He has just separated from his wife, is living with his parents and is trying to get back on his feet.
“Unfortunately on this occasion he was silly enough to go and take this cart.”
She said he was remorseful for what he had done.
Yeah. They always are.

Lucky he had a handy horse, eh? Although maybe not so lucky for the beast itself:
Smith denied four charges of animal cruelty – forcing a horse to pull an unreasonable load, beating a horse, fitting an inappropriate harness and failing to provide parasite control. He will stand trial on these counts at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on November 2.

...failing to provide parasite control...

Surely it's the parents who should be facing this charge!

Sounds like he was having a mare!

Clever enough not to put the cart before the horse.

No more.

He took the cart? Surely they mean he stole it?

Isn't Croydon rather close to New Addington? What would Sir Nicholas Carew (see Wikipedia), Master of the Horse to King Henry VIII have made of it? His sister Anne Carew married Nicholas Leigh of Addington. They were all keen on horses.

The name of the person involved, his method of transport and excuse given gives me reasonable cause to believe the man lives not a fair distance from a caravan - possibly illegally situated. It appears that he has been given bail. I hope the magistrates have a sense of humour if they expect him to turn up!

:D

"Pikey?"

I did rather wonder...

"Isn't Croydon rather close to New Addington?"

It's a suburb of Croydon. Twinned with Mos Eisley Spaceport.

"He might have needed the flowers for a Big Fat **** Wedding."

Heh!

Following a fruitless ransacking of the Ferrie home, plod panic may yet result in the planting of illegal firearms or loading kiddyporn onto a home computer.
