Staff at a community centre caring for 100 elderly people say they have been told to ban mobility scooters for health and safety reasons.Wha..?
Inspectors from Humberside Fire and Rescue were said to have advised staff that scooters are a fire hazard.Did it escape their notice that this is a club for the elderly? What next, closing down a petrol station because petrol is a fire hazard?
After being approached by the Mail, Humberside Fire and Rescue stressed mobility scooters are dangerous in the event of a fire, but said they had made a recommendation to the centre rather than an order.Fine. Then ignore them.
"....a recommendation ...."
A euphemism for a (Fire Service) Arse Protection Factor.
Yep ! Just another arse covering exercise !
Box ticked !
What they need to do is round up all the mobility scooters in Hull and give them to primary school choldren so they can keep safe in the playground. Two birds killed with one stone!
And can we really expect firefighters to continue to give such helpful advice in to their 60s? No wonder they're striking.
I was once involved in the conversion of a Victorian library into an arts centre. The fire officer who had to approve the conversion looked at the regs which said that doors had to be 3'6" wide (or whatever, I forget the exact measurement) and insisted on the doors being NARROWED by 3" to make them 3'6".
Let's make it just that bit harder to get out in event of a fire shall we?
Mobility scooters a fire hazard eh?
I now have a mental image of the residents doing burnout competitions in the day room ; 0)
Sort of an Octogenarian wacky races or something?
Hold on. I can sympathise here.
I have worked, both voluntary and paid at Old buggers homes/clubs, etc. And many is the time half the corridors and doors in the place are blocked TOTALY by these things.
If I was a fireman in a smoke filled, pitch black corridor with the flames licking over me and up my arse*, trying to find toasted Grannys, I TOO would be a little miffed to find my way blocked by the scoots of the local chapter of Hells Grandads.
* Done it on exercise at the sea safety training school. WITHOUT the Grannys.

Yep, only thing worse is when the 'Mother N Toddler Covens' hold their sabbats. Mobility scooters are usually red at least. Those 3-wheeled
Leopard Parent Panzers ,with better struts than my car, are usually in 'drug dealer black'.
Fire hazard - like that. Nothing if not creative.
Still like the description of mobility scooters as topless daleks.
Though, as I point out to my wife, that's our next car that is.

"Any object that causes or adds fuel to a fire, blocks escape, rescue routs, and/or obstructs fire fighting, is a fire hazard."
It does NOT have to be a box of matches, and a pile of old Echos.
Which was the character in Dr Who (Pertwee) that was some wired up old git in a dalek dress?
That would be Davros. First introduced in the Tom Baker story 'Genesis of the Daleks' if memory serves.

Just can not get that out of my head that it sounds so much like a "Bilderberg" meeting.
Was Dr Who prophetic attaching the name to a group which were the 60s equivalent of Borgs?
He was MUCH earlier than Baker though.
I would say Pertwee. MAYBE even Smith.
O.K, I give up. I am off to Google land....
Na Troughton... where the Hel did Smith come from?
Anyway, I have googled and not found what I was looking for. Basically because my favourite "monster" does not appear anyehere.
Remember the "Foam in the Tube" storys, about 73, or so?
Like an attack of fairy liquid on speed that ate people.

Thirty-four thousand smackers! *faints*

It's a dilemma - they need them to get there, and there often isn't enough room in these places to store them securely out of the way..
