Something To Bear In Mind When Councils Tell You How Hard Working They Are...

Some Basildon Council employees are to be given ten extra days of (sic) to work as volunteer police officers.
Hmmmm.....
The Employer Supported Policing Scheme sees the council allow their employees who volunteer as police officers to be released for up to ten days across the year from their paid day jobs to give back to their community.
So the council can afford to lose 10 days of 'work' so these people can go and 'work' for the useless Essex Police Farce instead?

Who on earth thinks this is a good idea?
The launch of the scheme was attended by the chief executive of Basildon Council Scott Logan, head of the special constabulary Superintendent Simon Anslow, district commander for Basildon Chief Inspector Sam Smith, Special Constable Gordon Humphries and members of the Special Constabulary.
Ah. The usual suspects.

Because many of its council tax payers had concluded that Basildon is overstaffed, its chief executive...sorry, managing director...has just announced that "An extra ten days of will be given to Essex police who volunteer to work as jobsworths, in order to give back to their community."

As these council workers (paid by the taxpayers) will need to be trained in law and Police policies and procedures (at taxpayers expense) it appears the residents are being ripped off by paying twice. Also, as it will take longer than 10 days to make them useful in any form, it may be 2 or 3 years before you see them in uniform popping into Donuts R Us. No doubt the people who thought this up all have university degrees, which confirms the fact that there can be a huge gap between education and intelligence.

If the council employees aren't 'giving back to the community' already with their day job then what the hell is the council paying them for to start with.

Plus, being paid by the council to do government work - just in a different department - well, it isn't an imposition on anyone. Its certainly not 'volunteering'.

Correct! And those university degrees will all be in something that has no bearing of the once-noble profession of real copperin'...

There, indeed, is the rub, no?
