Criminals will be forced to carry out full-time “hard labour” in an attempt to toughen up community punishments, ministers announced yesterday.Excellent news!
Offenders not jailed will be expected to work four days a week and spend the fifth day looking for a job under a shake-up of the much-criticised community payback scheme.
Under the new proposals, offenders who do not already have a job will be made to carry out unpaid “hard” work for eight hours a day, four days a week.Spot on!” That’s the sort of work they should..be…
That will include clearing up litter, cleaning graffiti and maintaining parks, community farms and other green spaces.
Former Home Secretary Jacqui Smith used two day-release prisoners to paint her £450,000 home when they should have been doing community work./facepalm
Still, maybe the fragrant Miss Smith had no knowledge of this?
It also emerged that, as payment for the work, Miss Smith donated an unspecified amount to a local charity which organised the project, the Batchley Support Group.Yes, it’s not looking good, is it?
A Prison Service spokeswoman confirmed they knew nothing at the time and the project has since been suspended. If only Jaqcui had been able to get her hands on Andy Dufresne, her Parliamentary expenses would have been a wonder to behold!
She said: ‘The decision to provide prisoners for this work was taken without consultation with HMP Hewell or the Ministry of Justice and was a mistake.
‘Offenders should work on projects which help the whole community.
‘The scheme has been suspended while a full internal investigation is undertaken.’
The prisoners were doing unpaid work, supervised by Batchley staff, as part of a ‘resettlement to work’ strategy.
Interesting phrasing, that; ‘no official links’…
No-one from the charity could be contacted for comment last night.
Miss Smith is not believed to have any official links to the charity.
"According to The Sun, Miss Smith yesterday initially denied knowing about the incident but later admitted what happened" ...

A congenital liar, dishonest to the core .. its in her very DNA ..
But then .. she's a typical socialist in that respect ..
Now that Miss Smith is no longer an MP, it's not like she can get parliamentary expenses to pay for tarting up her house but continues to freeload off someone else.
Smith's sense of entitlement is stunning.
Also, how did she STILL gain preferential treatment, although now a 'private citizen'?
Indeed, it begs the question, since she's no longer an MP .. why she persists in using her maiden name ?
She's not "Miss Smith" ... She's Mrs Richard "Tugger" Timney ..
I'd also be interested to know whether she has any intention of re-imbursing the public purse for her unethical (and possibly illegal) use of persons performing "Community Payback" duties ?
Ah graft, only the excuses change.
Being allowed to do 'hard graft' is actually a privilege, a reward and definitely not a punishment.
That seems to be the experience of a lot of young men I know who've been sentenced to CS.
I'll never forget Eldest coming home from a day's CS, sun browned, dog tired, muscles aching and having worked like a navey digging cable trenches for some local Railway Anorak Society.
The looking down at what he had done, what he had achieved in 8 hours of spade work, that was what 'rewarded' him.
Didn't make him any less likely to commit further offenses and sure as hell wasn't 'shaming'. Infact the reverse. It gave him sense of pride.
It'd be far better for courts to sentence kids to a JOB. That they are compelled to work a job of the court's choosing for minimum wage for the length of their sentence.
BTW when Eldest goes off to do CS it costs the taxpayer a fortune in travel warrants as there is no longer any CS provision in our area.
Everybody here is being too negative.
I'd love to watch Levi Bellfield and Charles Bronson help with Five-Bellies' home makeover.
Haddock, you've pulled it off again, to coin a phrase. I love the 'Tugger' line. I suppose that makes him a genital liar, rather than merely a congenital one.
Now the "Rancid Rasher from Redditch" has the temerity to attempt justification of her wrongdoing ..
Speaking today, Miss Smith said: 'You may or may not have seen the front of The Sun but they are having a bit a go at me today because two prisoners who were coming towards the end of their sentence and doing work experience carried out about three hours' work at my house doing a bit of decorating.
'It hadn't been cleared with the prison authorities in advance and they've now launched an inquiry and The Sun is having a go at me.
'Well, just to set, I hope, the record a little bit straight, these are guys that were working with a local community organisation in Redditch, a community organisation that actually gives work experience opportunities to prisoners as they come towards the end of their sentence
'They do a whole range of odd jobs and working in the local community - I think a really good scheme and really well done by this community group.
'On one day, when actually they didn't have anything else on, they did come to my house and do three hours-worth of painting, for which me and my husband made a donation to the community group.'

Are you seriously expecting to convince people that these prisoners could not have been better utilised by helping a blind, disabled or elderly person ?
You & your kind make me want to vomit !!!
@ David Gilles ..
Thank you and I wish I could claim original authorship of that nickname for Timney ..
The truth is, it was created by someone far wittier than I ..
We can safely assume that 'Tugger' was tugging while she had the painters in!

If I was married to that Munter, I'd be inclined to do a bit of "tugging" whether the painters were in or not .. sooner than having to "do the business" ..
"A congenital liar, dishonest to the core .. its in her very DNA .."
Or as we say around here, 'politician'.
"Indeed, it begs the question, since she's no longer an MP .. why she persists in using her maiden name ?"
I guess because it's on all her expense cheques?
"Being allowed to do 'hard graft' is actually a privilege, a reward and definitely not a punishment."
Probably because REAL hard graft is so rare on these things.
