Former deputy supervisor Louise Precious, 39, cleared out the accounts of the Market Weighton Pre-School by stealing almost £11,000.Helped by her husband, of course.
The group, which relies on charity funding, was only saved thanks to the efforts of its trustees, who dedicated their weekends to fundraising.
Louise Precious's deceit was discovered when companies began demanding money from the group for unpaid bills.Just ‘desperation’, ‘poverty’, or something else?
Yes, definitely something else – greed:
They used the money to pay off their debts and to "live beyond their means".
Louise Precious was seen to buy new clothes, boots and a new carpet. When she was arrested she claimed "other people" on the committee were to blame, but later admitted her guilt in court.Of course, there’s no real punishment for either of them:
Judge Jeremy Baker QC told her: "You were given a considerable amount of trust and you abused that trust."
She was given a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and ordered to undertake 300 hours of unpaid work.
Robert Precious was given a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid work. So, we, the taxpayer, are going to be paying that, I suppose?
The organisation is looking into a civil claim to recoup the money, but by the time that has come to court, the assets will have depreciated, or been disposed of. They will never see this money again.
Why can there not be a third option, where people are made to work for the people or organisation they have cheated?

Or even a fourth option .. that of branding the thief's forehead with a large "T" .. making them instantly identifiable as such ..
There wouldn't need to many such brandings before thieves or those tempted to steal got the message ..
I go with Haddock - but where would it stop in this rotten society? Surely there would hardly be a Parliamentarian without the brand? What about the CEOs, banksters and those senior "public servants"? I don't think this should stop us though.
Now had she told any migrants to go home, then she would be in real trouble
@ aco ..
"Surely there would hardly be a Parliamentarian without the brand? What about the CEOs, banksters and those senior "public servants" ? " ..
Firstly, they would no longer be Parliamentarians, CEO's, Banksters or Senior Public Servants, as they're clearly untrustworthy ..
Their lack of trustworthiness being one of the main reason why our society has become so rotten, because that sort of behaviour has been allowed to pay ..
So, like a surgeon we must clinically, coldly & bravely cut out the cancer which is blighting the lives of the many thousands who manage to live their without ever resorting to crime ..
After public branding, they would be declared "Outlaw" and removed from contact with decent citizens & be abandoned to their fate on remote islands ..
The new-fangled, namby-pamby ideas of Criminal Justice have failed monumentally .. its time for a return to the old ways ..
CH-there has long been calls for criminals to be dumped on a far-away island.Unfortunately the EU has decided that the location of this island is called Britain.
Jaded
@ Jaded ..
Aint that the truth ? ...
Should have an additional punishment in the form of mandatory compensation order for the full amount plus interest to be paid for as long as it takes. Their whole life if necessary.

Even if that means seizure & public auction of their 60" Flat-Screen tellies, X-Boxes, PS-3's, WII's etc ..
Because even if they're on benefits, you can bet a penny to a pinch of shit, they'll have some, if not all of the above items ..

It'd probably just become a fashion statement...

Well, quite! Why should they get away with it, which is what they effectively have done?
