Strewth!

A family are calling for people to stop referring to terror group Islamic State as ISIS
OK. Why?
… to avoid confusion with their eight-year-old's name.
Ummm, what? And when did Aussie families become quivering masses of neuroses?
The Leskiens were adamant this was not about race or religion but about the safety of their daughter.
'I just want her name to be safe and be what it's meant to be,' Mr Leskien said.
'All I really want is to go back to my quiet simple life. We’re just simple people.'
Really? Well, if you say so…
Mr Leskien said his 13-year-old son, Maximus, had already had to defend his sister's name at school.
Oh, this just has to be a wind-up! Not to be outdone, the US moron contingent says “Me too, me too!”:
A U.S. woman named Isis Martinez has started up the Thousands of Women and Girls Named Isis, Petition Media to Stop Calling the Terrorists by Our Name petition, asking people to show their support to 'save' the name.
'You can help save the name of #ThousandsofWomenNamedIsis and save us from the backlash of being associated with this horrific terrorist group of monsters,' Ms Martinez wrote in a post on the petition.
/facepalm
'Little girls, especially in the United States, named Isis have reported bullying while women with the name are facing negative associations through their employment and in public places like airports, airplanes even at times being called terrorists themselves.
'These shameful excuses for human beings should not have been assigned an English acronym with the name of thousands of women and children but there's still time to change the course of this path and more accurate names available.'
‘Assigned’ a name? By whom? Is there a National Name Coordination Unit for these things?
So far the care2 petition - which was started by Isis Martinez - has attracted almost 33,000 signatures.
No doubt Lord Grantham’s dog is a signatory…

Well the film "The Dam Busters"has been re-dubbed so Guy Gibson,s dog is now called Digger. There must be some organisation that deal with these things.

I work in the field of genetics. Genetic testing is indeed a salutary lesson, in life. I scrutinise the names of referrals for 'Developmental Delay' (read spakkers). Anecdotaly, there is a positive correlation between 'silly' names and mental'tardation. I'm seriously thinking of writing a scientific paper, entitled: 'The Correlation between intellectual deficit and non conformational first names: A prospective, meta study.....Or I could just resign.

Some of the comments are pretty good:
How stupid are people calling their daughter after a terrorist organisation.
Don't you dare start calling them ISIL, my son, Isil, will get very upset!

Try a deed poll, Isis, you can fix your surname at the same time so that people don't automatically assume you're a housemaid.

What on earth possesses parents to give their kids stupid names?

Now call me old fashioned, but to my way of thinking, a general rule of thumb when naming your offspring is to prefix your chosen name with a title like King/Queen, Lord/Lady etc. to see how scans.

Lady Julia, has a ring to it, Princess Spudulike would have to be a no, along with King Dwayne.

Ok, things can slip through the net, and you'd think that an integral part of the job of a registrar would be to sit the likes of Mr and Mrs Royd down and ask if they've really thought through the repercussions of naming their lovely daughter Emma?

I actually thisnk it's a rather nice name. Then again I was really interested in Egyptian mythology as a kid.

It's just hard luck really. I actually went to school with a Bart Simpson. I mean, who could have known?

I wonder how Ira Levin would feel about all this anyway?

LOL!

There are places on the continent where such would indeed happen. Your chosen name not on the approved list? It ain't coming in!

But here we've never had that. Oh, well, it helps teachers pick out which of the new intake is likely to be trouble...

"Then again I was really interested in Egyptian mythology as a kid. "

Ditto!
